National Oceanographic and Maritime Institute (NOAMI) was established in late 1978 by a group of marine science enthusiasts to promote education and training in oceanographic sciences, assist in the creation of a knowledge base and disseminate it to the people in general and the decision-makers in particular so that socio-economic development of Bangladesh could be achieved through proper exploration and exploitation of our oceanographic resources, which were the dreams of our Great Leader, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Over the past forty-three years, NOAMI has been carrying out work in promoting ocean sciences through executing projects and holding conferences, seminars, and symposia at the international, regional, and national levels. NOAMI also sends its delegates to participate in international conferences/workshops/seminars etc. The information gathered through such participation is disseminated to scientists, teachers, and students of the country through periodic meetings and seminars and publications of technical/scientific papers, and through the NOAMI journal & newsletter.
NOAMI has been related to the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO and has recently been involved in UN Ocean Decade activities. Since its inception in 1978, NOAMI organized many conferences, seminars, and workshops to bring the subject of oceanography to the attention of scientific, administrative and academic circles of the country.
As of now, NOAMI organized more than 100 seminars/workshops, 30 training programs based on ocean, marine, and multidisciplinary issues. NOAMI has been regularly organizing a Training course on Oceanography since 2003. More than 350 professionals are well trained through the course for multi-disciplinary institutes. This course has high-level acceptance in the professional and international community.
NOAMI has also regularly been publishing one of the pioneering Ocean and Marine science journals in Bangladesh since 1983. NOAMI has influenced the establishment of oceanographic departments in many universities and research institutes in Bangladesh. As a pioneer and non-profitable marine institute in Bangladesh, NOAMI’s contributions are enormous.
