ABOUT NOAMI

The National Oceanographic and Maritime Institute (NOAMI) was established in 1978 by a group of marine science enthusiasts to promote education and training in oceanographic sciences, build a robust knowledge base, and disseminate this knowledge to the public and decision-makers. Its goal has always been to support Bangladesh’s socio-economic development through the exploration and sustainable utilization of its oceanographic resources. The Founder Chairman of NOAMI was Rear Admiral Musharraf Hussain Khan, (ND), psc, BN, (Retd) (P No 2), (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M._H._Khan) who served as the former Chief of the Bangladesh Navy.

Over the past 46 years, NOAMI has been a leader in promoting ocean sciences by executing various projects and hosting international, regional, and national conferences, seminars, and symposia. Additionally, NOAMI regularly sends delegates to participate in international events and disseminates the insights gained through meetings, seminars, publications of scientific papers, and its own journal and newsletter.

NOAMI has been affiliated with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO and is actively engaged in UN Ocean Decade activities. Since its inception, it has organized over 150 seminars/workshops and 50 training programs focused on ocean, marine, and multidisciplinary issues. A hallmark achievement is its Training Course on Oceanography, initiated in 2003, which has trained over 400 professionals from multidisciplinary institutes and gained recognition from both national and international communities.

To further enhance capacity building and research excellence, NOAMI offers a series of seven specialized training programs:

  1. Training Course on Research in Oceanography: Principles and Applications (RoOPA)
  2. Professional Training Course on Training Program on Prospects, Challenges, and the Way Forward for the Blue Economy in Bangladesh
  3. Professional Training Course on Maritime/Ocean Governance: Operations, Safety, and Innovation
  4. Research Training Course on ArcGIS Pro and Remote Sensing
  5. Integrated Training Course on Numerical Modeling, Artificial Intelligence, and Geospatial Technology for Earth and Ocean Science Research
  6. Data Science with Python: Beginner to Advanced
  7. Training Course on R Programming for Research in Earth, Ocean, and Social Sciences (REOSS)
  8. Training Course on Spatial Analysis and Mapping with GIS

These programs aim to equip participants with state-of-the-art tools, methodologies, and insights to foster sustainable development in the region.

Since 1983, NOAMI has been publishing one of Bangladesh’s pioneering journals, The Journal of NOAMI, focused on ocean and marine sciences, further cementing its influence. It has also played a pivotal role in establishing oceanographic departments in numerous universities and research institutions across the country. As a pioneering nonprofit organization, NOAMI’s contributions to marine and ocean sciences in Bangladesh have been substantial and continue to grow.
