Executive Director

Dr. Mohan Kumar Das is an Executive Director of the National Oceanographic and Maritime Institute (NOAMI), Bangladesh, and hydro-meteorological scientist of the Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (RIMES), Bangkok, Thailand. He started his career in Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) and also served in SAARC Meteorological Research Centre (SMRC).

He was awarded the degree of Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) for his research on Data Assimilation and Mesoscale weather extreme prediction.

He has contributed many prestigious programs and training courses on Numerical modeling, Climate, hydrometeorology at home and aboard including SMRC, American Geophysical Union (AGU), CORDEX, AOGS, RIMES, SAMA, WMO UNESCO (IOC), etc.

Dr Das has received Ocean Science Best Trainee Award in the 10th UNESCO/IOC-ODC Training Course on “Regional Application of Coupled Climate Models”. Dr. Das won the Best Presenter Award (Professionals Category) for his presentation at the International Conference on Climate Change 2022 (ICCC 2022).

He is an expert member of the Committee of Meghna Advisory group (Bangladesh and India), Advisor of the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS) Women’s Network Cell. He is a founding and Executive Support Team (EST) member of the South Asian Meteorological Association (SAMA). He was an external member and thesis reviewer of many Ph.D., M Phil, and M Sc students.

He has completed a good number of research publications in the impact factor peer-reviewed journals which include ocean and climate extremes, hydro-meteorology, flash flood, rainfall, nor’westers/ tornadoes, monsoon, climate change, tropical cyclones.

He has contributed to many national and international projects including the seasonal and sub-seasonal projects of UN ESCAP. He is one of the lead consultants of the World Bank funded BWDB project entitled “consultancy service for expansion of flood forecasting model, improve inundation model in coastal and hotspot areas”.

He has organized many national and international events on Ocean and Marine Science including Leadership in Marine Technology.

He is a member of many professional societies and academic committees including National Oceanographic and Maritime Institute (NOAMI); Bangladesh Chemical Society (BCS); Bangladesh Physical Society (BPS), International Association for Urban Climate (IAUC), American Geophysical Union (AGU).
